Punt Builds Guide

One of the most powerful strategies in fantasy basketball is called punting. Instead of trying to win every category, you intentionally ignore one or two and dominate the rest — turning a weakness into a deliberate competitive advantage.

What Is Punting? Why It Works Common Punt Types Matchup Maths Punting Rules
The Concept

What Does "Punting" Mean?

Punting means building your team while deliberately ignoring one or two statistical categories. You accept that you will lose those categories most weeks — and in return, you build a team that dominates the categories you do target.

This works because in category leagues you only need to win more categories than your opponent, not all of them. Win 6 categories and lose 3 and you still take the matchup.

The Advantage

Why Punting Works

Focus your roster around strengths instead of chasing balance across all 9 categories
Unlock players that most managers undervalue because of one statistical weakness
Create category dominance — instead of being average everywhere, be elite in 6
Give your draft a clear identity so every pick reinforces your team's strategy

Players like Giannis Antetokounmpo become significantly more valuable in punt FT% builds because his weakness stops counting against you.

Punt Options

The Most Common Punt Builds

These are the three punt strategies used most often in 9-category leagues. Each one opens up a different tier of undervalued players.

Punt FT%

Free Throw %

Giannis Antetokounmpo
Domantas Sabonis
Rudy Gobert
Clint Capela

The most popular punt. Big men who dominate REB, BLK, and FG% but drag down FT%.

Punt TO

Turnovers

LeBron James
Luka Doncic
James Harden
Trae Young

High-usage, high-assist playmakers who produce across the board but turn it over often.

Punt BLK

Blocks

Steph Curry
Damian Lillard
Devin Booker
Jaylen Brown

Perimeter-heavy roster built around guards and wings — elite in PTS, 3PM, AST, STL.

How a 6–3 Win Still Wins

This is what a weekly matchup looks like when your punt build fires correctly.

3 – 6 LOSS

Your opponent wins FT%, Assists, and Turnovers every week — but those three losses are baked into your strategy from day one. Your team was never competing in those categories.

Key Rules

Rules for Building a Successful Punt Team

1
Commit early. Decide your punt at the draft — not mid-season. Your entire draft board changes once you commit to a punt.
2
Punt maximum two categories. Punting three or more means conceding too much ground and losing too many matchups by default.
3
Do not accidentally reinforce your punt. If you are punting FT%, avoid picking up a player who is also bad at FG% — that becomes a second unintended punt.
4
Use the waiver wire to reinforce your build. Look for breakout players who fit your specific punt profile throughout the season.
5
Know your league's categories. Some leagues use 8 or 10 categories. Always check before deciding what to punt.

Build Your Punt Strategy Live in Your Draft

The Draft Kit shows which players fit each punt build and highlights category targets by round — so your team has a clear identity from pick one.
