Punt Builds Guide
One of the most powerful strategies in fantasy basketball is called punting. Instead of trying to win every category, you intentionally ignore one or two and dominate the rest — turning a weakness into a deliberate competitive advantage.
What Does "Punting" Mean?
Punting means building your team while deliberately ignoring one or two statistical categories. You accept that you will lose those categories most weeks — and in return, you build a team that dominates the categories you do target.
This works because in category leagues you only need to win more categories than your opponent, not all of them. Win 6 categories and lose 3 and you still take the matchup.
Why Punting Works
Players like Giannis Antetokounmpo become significantly more valuable in punt FT% builds because his weakness stops counting against you.
The Most Common Punt Builds
These are the three punt strategies used most often in 9-category leagues. Each one opens up a different tier of undervalued players.
Free Throw %
The most popular punt. Big men who dominate REB, BLK, and FG% but drag down FT%.
Turnovers
High-usage, high-assist playmakers who produce across the board but turn it over often.
Blocks
Perimeter-heavy roster built around guards and wings — elite in PTS, 3PM, AST, STL.
How a 6–3 Win Still Wins
This is what a weekly matchup looks like when your punt build fires correctly.
Your Team (Punt FT%)
Opponent (Balanced)
Your opponent wins FT%, Assists, and Turnovers every week — but those three losses are baked into your strategy from day one. Your team was never competing in those categories.
